Mission Statement

The Center for Health and the Environment (CHE) is a center of excellence within the John Muir Institute of the Environment (JMIE). The focus of research in CHE is the effect of environmental agents, including chemicals and radiation, on the health of humans, animals and other organisms. To investigate these issues, researchers at the CHE conduct epidemiologic studies in human populations, and experiments are performed with animals, organisms, cells, and molecules to measure environmental exposures as well as health outcomes associated with them. In addition, research on the development of agents for population control of humans and wildlife seeks to mitigate the adverse effects of overabundance on the environment. The central mission of the Center is as follows:

1. Encourage, coordinate, facilitate and perform multidisciplinary research related to environmental exposures and the causes and prevention of adverse health effects.

2. Facilitate exchange of information and communication between academic scientists, resource agencies and the public.

3. Provide research and training opportunities to professional students, graduate and undergraduate students as well as postdoctoral fellows.

4. Provide specialized research facilities, expertise and equipment to investigators at the Center, and on the UCD campus, for use in toxicology, epidemiologic, and environmental studies.
